The Haratin are an ethnic group primarily found in the western Sahel and southwestern Maghreb regions of North Africa. They are most commonly associated with countries like Mauritania, Morocco, Western Sahara, Algeria, Senegal, Tunisia, and Libya. In Mauritania, the Haratin form the largest ethnolinguistic group, comprising about 40% of the population, or roughly 1.5 million people. This group is often referred to as descendants of sub-Saharan African slaves, and they typically speak Maghrebi Arabic dialects.
