Adivasis, meaning “original inhabitants” in Sanskrit, are the indigenous tribal communities of the Indian subcontinent. The term is used as a socio-political identity for various groups officially classified as Scheduled Tribes (STs) under the Indian Constitution. Although Adivasis are diverse in language, culture, and ancestry, they share a long-standing relationship with the forests, hills, and natural landscapes of India. As of the 2011 census, over 104 million Adivasis live in India, making up about 8.6% of the population.
The word “Adivasi” was first used in the 1930s by tribal activists seeking to unify distinct tribal groups under a shared identity that emphasized their ancient connection to the land. Despite its wide use in everyday and political discourse, the Indian government uses the legal term “Scheduled Tribes” in official contexts for constitutional recognition and affirmative action programs.
Historically, many Adivasi groups trace their roots to ancient civilizations such as the Indus Valley, with cultural influences from Dravidian, Austroasiatic, Indo-Aryan, and Tibeto-Burman peoples. However, scholars argue that the notion of Adivasis as the “first people” is complicated by centuries of migration and displacement across the subcontinent.
Adivasi communities are spread throughout India, with large populations in states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and the northeastern region. They practice distinct traditions, languages, and belief systems, often tied to nature and ancestral worship.
Today, Adivasis face significant challenges, including land dispossession, poverty, lack of access to education, and political marginalization. Nevertheless, they remain a vital part of India’s cultural mosaic. Movements for tribal rights, education, and cultural preservation continue to grow, reinforcing the identity and rights of Adivasis in a rapidly changing nation.
