Secrets of the Neheya: Unveiling Bena Initiation Rituals

The Neheya Initiation, shrouded in secrecy and mystery, unfolds as a sacred rite of passage among the Bena people of Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands.

Traditionally reserved for men and veiled from the eyes of women, this initiation, also known as the ‘Drin Kol Wara’ or ‘Drink Cold Water’ ritual, carries profound significance in Bena culture, symbolizing the transition from youth to adulthood and the acquisition of knowledge and leadership.

As the encroachment of modernity threatens to erode ancient customs, the men of Bena have made a bold decision to share the essence of the Neheya Initiation with the wider world. Rooted in ancestral wisdom and entrusted to each generation, these rituals serve not only as rites of passage but as repositories of communal knowledge, binding past, present, and future in a continuous cycle of tradition.

Central to the Neheya Initiation are a series of rituals that test the physical and mental fortitude of the initiates. The bleeding of the nose, tongue, and male genitalia marks the beginning of the journey, signifying a purification of the body and spirit. The cane swallowing ritual, a cornerstone of the initiation, acts as a cleansing process, purging the initiate of impurities and infusing him with strength and clarity of mind.

Crafted with meticulous care, the cane used in the ritual undergoes a process of preparation that spans weeks, ensuring its smooth surface and optimal digestibility. The length and shape of the cane are tailored to facilitate its ingestion, a feat that requires both physical resilience and spiritual resolve.

The initiation period itself unfolds over the course of several months, during which initiates undergo rigorous preparation and dietary restrictions. Meals consisting solely of pork fat and boiled kaukau are believed to prime the body for the challenges ahead, while the act of lying face-up during sleep serves to elongate the intestines in readiness for the cane swallowing ritual.

Against the backdrop of flowing creeks and cleared stones, the culmination of the Neheya Initiation takes place. Guided by chants and the rhythmic flow of water, initiates steel themselves for the task at hand. With courage as their compass, they navigate the treacherous path of cane ingestion, guided by the expertise of seasoned mentors.

For the Bena people, the Neheya Initiation is more than a mere ritual; it is a testament to the resilience of tradition in the face of modernity’s tide. As initiates emerge from the waters, adorned in traditional attire and bearing the mantle of adulthood, they carry with them the legacy of generations past, ensuring that the flame of Bena culture continues to burn brightly in the winds of change.
